A Taste of Burgundy

Burgundy is a beautiful region in France that is home to some of the best wines in the world; it grabs top spot on our wine region barrel list this year.  The number one reason to visit Burgundy, is of course, the wine! You and your friends can immerse yourself in the wine culture, and live the life of a sommelier during your visit.

I visited with my own best friends, and am very grateful to have such amazing people in my life who I can call and invite on an adventure, and they always say yes!  Nothing says friendship like a long international flight, jet lag, and figuring out how to pack enough cute outfits for a week in only a tiny carry on (where do all the shoes go?).  Luckily the reward of traveling through the beautiful rolling vineyards of France is well worth the effort.

There are quite a few nice towns along the region, we chose to stay in the regional center, Beaune.  The advantages of staying in town included easy accessibility by train, lots of hotel options for a variety of budgets, and many great restaurants.  There are also plenty of tasting rooms and historical attractions around the village and everything is accessible by foot within the old town. We had a great time and would highly recommend spending a day in Beaune.

In Burgundy, wine mainly consists of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, hailing from small boutique vineyards and winemakers, resulting in excellent taste and quality. It is home to one of the best terroirs in the world. This high quality also creates a lot of demand and somewhat high price points.  The advantage of being in the region means you can find delicious regional wine for a fraction of the cost you would pay at home.

Not only is the wine delectable, but so is the french cuisine.  The city of Beaune provided our absolute favorite spot of the trip, Caves Madeleine.  It is very popular with the locals so we recommend booking ahead! We have more recommendations and details on these spots as our burgundy series continues. Rest assured though, In the beautiful countryside of the region there is an abundance of fresh produce and masterful chefs.  In addition to great cuisine, every restaurant we visited had an expansive wine list of local varieties.

There is so much to explore in the area of Burgundy. Our number one suggestion is to book a wine tour.  We opted for a personalized tour, where our guide took us all around the region on an amazing tasting adventure.  We had plenty of time in a day to explore the area, taking in the historic Clos de Vougeot, where all this amazing wine making began. We followed this up with three great tastings, culminating with the opportunity to meet Ludivine Griveau, the first ever female winemaker for the Hospices de Beaune.  All the tasting rooms in the wine tour offers an opportunity for you to purchase wine to ship home as well, so you can take a little bit of your trip back with you.

Deciding where to go on your trip can be difficult with so many options around the world. Still for this year our top pick was the beautiful region of Burgundy, France. We hope you enjoyed this small taste of Burgundy and look forward to offering travel suggestions, recommendations and fun anecdotes as we explore this beautiful wine region of France.
