Les Jardin des Remparts

If you find yourself in the gorgeous village of Beaune within the Côte-d’Or on a sunny day, I definitely recommend a lunch at Les Jardin des Remparts. It is a one Michelin star restaurant in the heart of Burgundy that exemplifies French gastronomy. Situated in a beautiful outdoor garden terrace, where you can sit with good company, choose from the region’s generous wine lists, and sample the exquisite cuisine.

The menu is delectable and varied for choice and preference. They offer a seasonal tasting menu, but be aware you should prepare yourself for a leisurely lunch. We opted for the à la carte option. The main event was the shared starter: a rich foie gras terrine with seasonal berries and beetroot. It was creamy and delicious, with a lovely balance of salt from the foie gras and sweetness from the fruit. The greens added a nice lift of freshness to keep the decadent course from overpowering our palate in the summer heat.

For mains we took separate directions: I enjoyed a lovely sea bream, served on a bed of seasonal greens. We shared a bottle of 2017 Puligny-Montrachet « Le Trézin », a complex buttery Chardonnay offering smooth citrus notes, light spices, and a lovely minerality. As we chose different courses, it was bold enough to pair with different dishes, but still very refreshing on such a sunny day. Of course we couldn’t say “no” to the cheese plate for dessert, the cart was too tempting, and we were able to select a great assortment from around France. We shared a plate starting with creamy fresh goat, moved into flavorsome soft cow cheeses, and finished with an intense blue.

Chef Christophe Bocquillon took us on a wonderful gastronomic discovery. We also enjoyed the hospitality of the sommelier, who served one of my favorite champagnes by the glass, the Gosset Grand Reserve Brut. It is a flagship wine, with delicate bubbles and a beautiful toasty finish, deserving of a celebration with friends in Beaune. A votre santé!
